Excavation & sitework in Byers, CO.

Farther out on the plains: long driveways, wide-open lots and Arapahoe County rules.

A long, freshly graded gravel driveway running between pine trees and a fence line

Byers is one of the oldest communities on this stretch of the plains, with a post office since 1873 and a name that honors William Byers, the founder of the Rocky Mountain News. It’s an unincorporated community in Arapahoe County, east of Strasburg along I-70.

Because Byers is entirely in Arapahoe County, the paperwork is simpler than in Strasburg or Bennett: Arapahoe County handles building permits for the unincorporated area, and Arapahoe County Public Health permits septic systems. Arapahoe County Public Health replaced Tri-County Health Department for septic permits, and its septic rules carried over Tri-County’s largely unchanged.

Work around Byers runs to the big and the long: driveways that run a quarter mile from the road, culverts where those driveways cross the borrow ditch, pads for ag buildings and shops, and trenches for water and power that have to cover real distance. Open ground means wind and runoff, so we grade for drainage on every job.

Common jobs in Byers

  • Long gravel driveways
  • Driveway culverts
  • Ag building and shop pads
  • Long utility trench runs
  • Drainage swales

STA 1+00Byers questions

Local answers for Byers.

Who permits septic systems in Byers?

Arapahoe County Public Health. Byers is entirely in Arapahoe County, which has had its own public health department since Tri-County Health Department dissolved. Septic systems there follow Colorado Regulation 43 plus Arapahoe County’s own septic regulations.

Do you come out as far as Byers?

Yes. Byers is part of the area we serve from Strasburg, along with Bennett, eastern Aurora and the surrounding eastern Colorado communities. Call (720) 277-9760 to talk about your project.

How do I keep a long gravel driveway from washing out?

Give the water a way off. A driveway with a crown, ditches along its sides and culverts where it crosses a drainage sheds water instead of carrying it. Most washouts start where water runs down the driveway itself, so the fix is shape and drainage first, then gravel.
